journal

Throughout my project process I did a lot of research. I had to look up lots of different things.

I started off making a Research Plan to work out what I needed to look up, I produced; Sarah Everard, Statistics to do with sexual assault, and the Fritzl case, and with Black Lives Matter I wanted to look up the George Floyd and Breanna Taylor cases, more cases about people who were wrongly killed by the police as well as statistics to do with them. I wanted to do this because it shows that it could happen to anyone.

When I looked up the Sarah Everard case, I found out a lot of things I did not know about it, I found out that she was killed by a Police Officer, I also found out that someone else was in a similar area on the same day who was also targeted, she went on to say she was sad but not surprised. Again, I think knowing this and talking about this shows that it could happen to anyone, and that most the time it is just unlucky timing.

Sometimes this is not always true, for example when I looked up the Fritzl case, Josef (the father) abused his daughter from the age of 11, when she turned 18, he locked her in the basement and kept het there for 24 years. He had been planning this for a while, he said when he was in court before he was sent to jail that he believed he was born to be a rapist and have control over his daughters. During the time Elizabeth was locked up she mothered seven children to her father. This shows that in these situations, it does not matter who you are, you might be in the wrong place or part of some disgusting plan, it just shows that as women we are always afraid and most the time, we have good reason to be cautious.

When looking at stats I found out that 1 in 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her life, every 98 seconds (about 1 and a half minutes) an American is raped, 85,000 women are raped in Britian and Wales alone every year. (That is roughly 11 rapes – adult alone- every hour, Approximately 90% of those women knew who raped them prior to the offense, A third of people believe that women who flirt are partially responsible for being raped, Women are more likely to be raped by someone they know, whereas men are more likely to get raped by strangers, 1 in 20 women that live in the EU have been raped after the age of 15 that’s around 9 million women (about half the population of New York), Out of 134 complaints reported, only 14 happened in single sex changing rooms, the other 120 were in unisex changing rooms, Six in ten women take precautions to avoid sexual assault, 2 in 3 LGBT+ workers have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace, 20% of women and 4% of men have experienced some type of sexual assault since the age of 16, equivalent to 3.4 million female and 631,000 male victims. (The Crime Survey for England and Wales 2017) Of victims who experienced rape (including attempts) since the age of 16, half (49%) had been a victim more than once, more than 4 in 10 were victimized by their partner or an ex-partner. I think knowing stats is important because it means you can stick to facts rather than making things up.

Moving on to my Black Lives Matter research, in my research plan I talked about how I wanted to look up, Breanna Taylor, George Floyd, other cases, the history of segregation and the Edward Colston Statue.

Looking at the history of segregation showed me that its been going on for far too long, I think talking about it in my podcast means that I can show people how far we have come far but how far we still must go.

Looking into the smaller cases means that I can show people that it happens to anyone in any age range or of any sex.

Looking into the Edward Colston statue meant I could talk about how the people of England wanted to take down more of the statues because they Edward was a slave trader and everyone in England wanted to get the rest of the Slave Trader statues taken down.

Looking into the Breanna Taylor case meant I could talk about how it happens to a woman who did nothing wrong but have been caught up with the wrong kind of people.

Looking into the George Floyd case meant I could talk more about that because before I looked it up I didn’t know much, it also means I can talk about unlucky he was because of how many things went wrong in his situation that don’t normally.

SA research

I did a lot of research around Sexual Assault as its something that sits closer to home, I wanted to talk about cases that have happened in the past and the Sarah Everard case but also the smaller things that happen to girls on a day to day bases.

Sarah Everard went missing on Wednesday 3rd March, they found her remains a week later but the remains weren’t confirmed until the 12th . An often excuse for women being kidnapped usually by men is “they were asking for it” this excuse is also used when women are raped. Women that don’t wear many clothes are often seen as “asking for it.” However Sarah was wearing, leggings a coat and a warm hat, she was covering up which is what most people do in these situations and men and sometimes women still find a way to victim blame.

Moving onto statistics

15% of 12-17 year olds, 54% of 18-34 year old’s, 28% of 35-64 year old’s and 3% of 65+ year olds have been victims of Sexual Assault, and these are only the people who have come forward about it, this needs to change. And it is not just the women that are suffering, the men are too however when you look at in comparison, 1 out of 6 women have been the victim of a rape attempt, whereas its 1 out of 31 men that have been victims of attempted rape, and if that is not bad enough to make you think, 1 in 4 children are sexually assaulted before they reach the age of 18.  Another disgusting set of statistics; 8 in 10 victims knew their attacker before the assault, 95% of assaults go unreported, every 21 hours someone on an American COLLEGE campus gets raped.

1 in 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her life.

Every 98 seconds (about 1 and a half minutes) an American is raped.

85,000 women are raped in Britian and Wales alone every year. (That is roughly 11 rapes – adult alone- every hour)

Approximately 90% of those women knew who raped them prior to the offense.

A third of people believe that women who flirt are partially responsible for being raped.

Women are more likely to be raped by someone they know, whereas men are more likely to get raped by strangers.

1 in 20 women that live in the EU have been raped after the age of 15 that’s around 9 million women.

Out of 134 complaints reported, only 14 happened in single sex changing rooms, the other 120 were in unisex changing rooms.

Six in ten women take precautions to avoid sexual assault.

2 in 3 LGBT+ workers have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace.

20% of women and 4% of men have experienced some type of sexual assault since the age of 16, equivalent to 3.4 million female and 631,000 male victims. (The Crime Survey for England and Wales 2017)

Of victims who experienced rape (including attempts) since the age of 16, almost half (49%) had been a victim more than once.

More than 4 in 10 were victimized by their partner or an ex-partner.

Knowing about these facts has meant I can look at how bad it is in America as well as in the UK, I wanted to get a wide variety of statistics so I can show everyone its a world wide issue, using statistics also means I can show people how bad it really is with actual facts. I think using stories from the past (for example I researched the Fritzl case) shows that this has been an issue for a long time and we can’t let it continue.

The Fritzl case is about Josef Fritzl who kidnapped his daughter Elizabeth after her 18th birthday and kept her hidden in their basement for 24 years, during this time she had 7 kids (he fathered all of them) one of which unfortunately passed away and Josef incinerated his body. Three of her kids lived in the basement with her where as the other three lived upstairs with her parents as Josef forced Elizabeth to write notes saying she was okay but didn’t have time to look after the babies begging her mum to look after them.

Its a horrifying case but in the end he was caught because Elizabeth’s oldest daughter fell Ill due to the lack of Vitamin D from being stuck downstairs, the daughter was taken to the hospital but after seeing her the nurse was worried about how pale she was so demanded to see the mother and Elizabeth told one of the Nurses everything and she and all of her children were finally set free. Josef committed suicide after being in Jail for a month. Josef also said at court (before he went to jail) that he believed he was born to be a rapist and dominate over his daughter.

research BLM

With my Black Lives Matter research I looked up the more well known cases, for example Breanna Taylor and George Floyd and more into them and the backstory of why they actually died, I also looked into some less known cases and this meant I could show the range of ages, for example I talk about Tamir Rice, who was only 12 and was shot because he was playing with a toy gun in a park, I also talked about Daniel Prude who was 41 and was shot while having a mental health “episode” and was running down the street naked. I wanted to show that it happens to different ages, people with different jobs, people in different status’s and sometimes nobody is given consequences.

When we look at Brenna Taylor’s case action was taken against the police officers involved in her arrest  Officer Brett Hankinson was charged with three counts of “wanton endangerment” for firing into a Neighbours apartment. Under Kentucky law, someone is guilty of wanton endangerment if they commit an act that shows “an extreme indifference to the value of human life.” After the shooting the police made some changes; They now must wear body cameras, all warrants must be approved by a senior officer, The police chief was fired in June because it was his fault the cameras weren’t on.

This information meant I could use more variety in the topics, we needed to talk about all the different issues so we can show it happens to everyone and not just a certain age or sex.

pitch

Overview Brief– My podcast is about how society needs to change, I talk about BLM and how far we have come with it already and how far we still must go. I also talk about Sexual Assault and include some real cases people have been put through. This must change.

Why?– I wanted to talk about the minorities, especially for the people who don’t have a voice. I know what it’s like to feel helpless and not want to talk about things (with my mental health issues) and I don’t want anyone to be in that situation, so I think it is important to keep people aware of what is happening pretty much every day even if it isn’t seen as a “trend” on social media anymore. Giving people a voice means that if other people have been through similar things especially with the sexual assault side of things it means they can see that they aren’t alone. It also is a way of keeping the issues alive as much as I can, it can keep the conversations going. And if it changes one person’s views on either situation into a more positive supporting light, then that’s good enough for me.

Inspirations and Research- I like the idea of mixing the serious talk with some music, it then gives people time to breathe and relax a minute. I took this from Radio shows; however, they normally have an equal amount of talking and songs whereas I just want to use a few as an interval way. I also think asking my audience questions will be a good way of involving them and keeping them interested.

My audience is based mainly around Sexual Assault cases now, the plan is too including a few of them so people can see how bad it used to be. I’m also going to talk about the Sarah Everard case. Another very important thing to me is the statistics so I can back up my words and again show people how bad this really is, I also think it’s important to talk about how they are not alone or weak for not wanting to talk about it, it’s up to when they feel safe and ready.

I need to do more research about BLM, I want to talk about how it’s not a trend and some people on social media are treating it that way and I don’t think they realize that they are. The main things I want to talk about in that section are; George Floyd and how he was the kickstart to BLM coming back into light May 25th, 2020, More similar cases of people who were wrongly killed by the police (mention The Hate U Give), I want to shed more light on how far we have already come and talk about the history of Segregation and Rosa Parks, I also think it’s important to talk about the Edward Colston statue being teared down in Bristol, and talking about how much damage that has done.

Breakdown– I want to keep the minority issues very much alive and in people’s faces. We can’t let the BLM and Sexual Assault issues drop anymore; We can’t treat them like trends that are only relevant when we want them to be, there is a time these need to change, and that time is now.

I want to start off by telling people what we will be talking about, so they have a warning, I am going to play a song which then gives people the time to decide if they want to listen to the podcast or not. After the song I’ll explain that we will be talking about the BLM issues and how people have been affected by that and how far we have come but again how far we must go. Then I will play some more songs so people can either unwind from that and prepare themselves for the next bit, tune out/in, or talk it over with someone if they’re listening to it in groups. Then just in case new people have joined and don’t want to hear the next bit I will reremind people what I am talking about just in case, I will then talk about that at the end I will play more music so people can leave on a higher note, It means the information is in their head, but they have some songs to listen to as well.

Characters- I want to include myself and someone else so I can bounce of them for creativity, It also means that I can get a different opinion on the situations with, I also want to talk to my friends and see if I can get some of their stories and opinions so it’s like doing a live interview but not quite because again getting more opinions. Mainly it will be me talking.

Style– The style of my product is going to be mainly serious; I want to talk about films to do with both topics, songs and the actual news. But I want some more light-hearted moments, so it isn’t all hard to listen. I think the contrast will also make it more interesting and keep people intrigued and they won’t get bored.

Audience– My main audience is people between the age 14-18,  I want more people to be able to learn about the issues that make our world the way that it is. It also means that we can bring up conversations around people who already know about it, it can also be shown to younger viewers because they can be made aware of the world as well.

project proposal

Level 3 Diploma Unit 8 Project Proposal pro formal

Name  Meg
Pathway  Podcast
Project title  Everyone deserves a voice.
Section 1: Rationale (approx. 100 words)
I decided to talk about the minorities in society and how all the things that they have had to suffer with throughout lockdown. I decided to talk about BLM, how all of this has been given more attention than normal because we are all at home on our phones, I want to talk about how some people treated BLM as a trend because they thought it was “cool.” I also wanted to talk about how women feel unsafe leaving the house, sexual abuse, and Sarah Everard because I think as a woman, I have experience in feeling unsafe walking home alone when a guy is walking behind you and you do not know them. Adding statistics to the sexual abuse will make it hit harder, I hope. Everyone deserves a voice and bringing up this will make it easier for people to talk about it and spread the word.
Section 2: Project concept (approx. 200 words)
My idea is showing people that just because minorities and their struggles are not being posted on social media does not mean they are not still suffering every day. It is also showing people that have suffered with sexual assault or abuse that it is not their fault, and that they are strong and its best to reach out to someone but only if they are comfortable and they are NOT alone. Talking about BLM will bring that back into some light and show that it is not a trend, it has been happening for decades, it used to be worse, but it is still happening and will not stop anytime soon, so we need to keep spreading awareness. Being able to talk about these openly with people about both the situations, will keep everyone hopefully more aware of everything so they can share the messages and show their support. It will also get more people to start talking about it and further spreading the message.
Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 50 words)
My idea is to make a podcast, about the minorities issues that have come up over lockdown, shining light on the situations. Reminding sexual assault victims, it is not their fault and talking about the horrifying statistics. Remembering everything that the BLM movement is, and how far we have come but how far we still must go.

Idents

I chose two Idents from BBC1 and two from Channel 4

The first ident I chose from BBC1 was this one BBC One Ident – Dogs – YouTube in this ident the dogs are running around in random directions before starting to go into a pattern turning into a circle indicating the BBC1 logo. This is connected to nurture and humour, the dogs create the “awh” factor and drag in dog lovers, its also has a family feel because the dogs are all working together to create the circle. The plainness of the green grass behind the dogs makes them stand out more making the circle more obvious. This is part of the BBC special idents known as the “cirlce”. One of the themes of this ident is friendship/companionship as dogs are seen as “a mans best friend” and at the beginning the dogs are working as a team, this is seen through out the ident as they go from messing around to running in a circle. The happiness that comes from this ident is also evident, the enjoyment the dogs are so clearly having radiates off the screen and into the watcher, there is also something weirdly enjoyable about watching dogs enjoy themselves that most people cant help but smile at.

There isn’t much to talk about Narration why’s in the BBC idents apart from the fact there seems to be a clear outsider in this one, or maybe even a leader, the smaller dog, A Jack Russel, does everything different to the other, bigger dogs. This of course going against stereotypes of the small dog being in charge, however when the dogs are running through the obstacles, the Jack Russel takes a slightly different way for example on the jump fence thing, the bigger dogs jump over it and the smaller dog runs underneath, this shows that even though you’re small you can still do what other dogs/people can. Its a subtle way of showing the unique side of the dog character. Another example of showing that it looks like the Jack Russel is in charge is at the end when they’re all running in the circle and the Jack Russel is just stood in the middle watching them to make sure they’re doing the right thing. The genre of this ident includes comedy as well as a bit of competition, the humour comes from watching the dogs doing what they do and then the competition is the part where they all do the obstacles almost seeing who can get there first.

The other ident from BBC1 I chose was Bbc1 hippos ident 2006 – YouTube its quite similar to the first one but with hippos, its got the same joy and “awh” factor. Again its also connected to humour and nurture, the nurture being connected to the hippos. The emptiness of the sea they are in makes the hippos stand out a little more, they all come from different directions making it more interesting and keeping your eyes darting across the screen before then turning into a circle, however this time you are looking up into the circle which then means you can see the sun. In a way this makes me think that they’re trying to say BBC1 is better than the others, its almost saying its the light at the end of the tunnel because the sea is dark. The theme of joy is quite radiant watching the hippos in their natural habitat is quite heart-warming, it also brings memory’s of childhood, going to the zoo with your family and watching the animals enjoying life and being themselves, you also sometimes got to watch their feeding times or them doing tricks, its a familiar feeling. It has a feeling of safeness because of the familiarity.

With the hippos in this indent there isn’t much to talk about apart from the fact that when the animal goes from above water to below it goes from real to not so. The hippo gains some friends, the hippo numbers grow and are joined by some fish and the rest of things under the water trying to make this as realistic as possible. We follow the hippos from just swimming about and enjoying themselves and then into a circle which is the best part of narrative we have from this ident as there is no clear characters just a beginning and end. The theme of this ident is family and teamwork, as well as the nurture side of things, the animals appeal to the softer side of people, the more loving and caring, as does the team work used to create the circle. The circle is a well known type of BBC1 Ident they used this as a symbol of unity and a “nod” towards the channels beginnings and heritage and in particular the globe icon was used in various different styles for much of BBC’s history and past, this then reminds the older watchers of times they may remember.

The first Channel 4 ident I studied was Channel 4 | Idents – YouTube the first one in this complication. I chose this one because its simple but effective, it involves a lot of different things for example all the different scenery, climbing up the hill, shouting at the top of the hill, the village. Including all the different places keeps people on their toes and makes them pay attention, it also includes some humour in the middle, as well as some personification. The metal channel 4 logo stands at the top of the hill and growls, it makes the whole village shake, its a funny moment but it also leaves you a little in suspense because you wonder what’s going to happen. Another bit of humour happens when the channel four logo stops growling and everyone leaning against the wind falls over, its a familiar feeling falling over, granted not a pleasant one but we all know how it feels to fall over. We also know how it feels to try and lean against wind and not fall over, it brings back that childish side and the memory’s that go along with it. The personification comes from the channel 4 logo because obviously a logo cant walk up a hill let alone growl and make people fall of their bikes.

The narration of this ident is definitely interesting to say the least, it shows it from all points of the action. The channel four logo, showing its journey and the effort, that the logo has put into being heard, not to mention the fact that when it growls, it growls the jingle for channel four. Another example of the weird narration, is the dog replying, the small dog barks back almost trying to get its voice heard as well. We also see people ignoring it and shutting the windows on the unexplainable growling that’s almost causing a storm. The fact that the growl is getting to everyone is almost as if its channel four trying to bring everyone in the village together so they can all be aware of the logo and therefore the channel. The genre of this piece I would say has a level of comedy and ridiculousness due to the impossibility of a logo walking or growling, however there is a layer of family friendliness behind it as well due to the children, teens, mums, dads, it has the whole family involved and there are things all people can relate to in this ident for channel 4.

The second Channel 4 Ident I chose follows straight after the previous, in the Channel 4 compilation. In this one it starts off with children running around and playing together, this reminds me of before covid when we were still allowed to see our friends. Its nostalgic again, it makes people think about when they last saw kids playing together or times when they did when they were younger. Its a friendship beginning it shows the pure friendship of childhood and they enjoyment and fun that goes along with it as well as the carefreeness. It then goes on to start joining in with the Channel 4 logo, it shows that channel 4 fit well with the child crowd, its also another use of personification because logos definitely don’t play football. At the end the kids are sat on the Channel 4 logo, its almost as if its showing its a family channel, because the kids are involved it also shows adults walking around in the background which is what makes me think its a family channel. One of the main themes of this ident is comedy, its meant to be funny that the kids are playing football with a TV channel.

In my last ident the channel four logo, the narrative for this ident is to do with the channel four logo, it starts off being based around the children and them enjoying themselves playing football and riding their bikes but when the channel four logo comes in, it is very clear that it is the main character. It is bigger than the other characters, and has more status. When the children are sat on channel fours shoulders it makes them more important that everyone that’s still on the floor because they are up higher and again have more status than the others. The genre of this ident was comedy and mystery, we don’t know why the channel four logo is there, we don’t know what it is doing or what it wants, adding a layer of mystery to why the kids are sat on the logos shoulders. The comedy aspect is from the personification of channel four logo walking around and interacting with children in the village which is funny because things that don’t exist shouldn’t be able to interact with real things, its a moment of impossibility which makes it more enjoyable because we know it would never happen in real life.

Industry Professional

During April last year, we had to look into doing work experience I decided to contact BBC Somerset and ask if I could go there for a week, unfortunately they said No, however they offered me the opportunity to go in and talk to the staff and get a feel for the place and ask any questions I have as I want to work in Radio. It was a really good experience being able to ask the important questions such as to get into radio, the links and ways to start.

Here is a link to the website for more information BBC – Somerset Live

How to embed widgets

To make your portfolio more interactive you need to add widgets and blocks as well as multimedia. This is a lot easier to do than you may think.

  1. Start off by finding the right page to add your interactive source.
  2. Decide whether to add widgets/blocks or multimedia.
  3. If you chose multimedia follow the following steps.

Adding Multimedia

Adding multimedia is quite simple.

  1. Decide what photo you want to add.
  2. Then press this button

3. After pressing this button you will be presented with many different selections and options.

4. Press Gallery and select your photo from the options.

Adding Blocks and Widgets

Follow the same steps as before, click the plus button but instead of pressing the gallery button, press browse all this gives you the full access, just clicked the desired blocks and widgets and it will go onto your page.

Evaluation

After looking at professional portfolios, I decided to relook at mine and think about the good things and the bad ones. In my portfolio I have included multimedia products such as photos and screengrabs from work or projects, giving proof of my abilities so people can see what I am capable of. Using photos also means my portfolio has more to it and makes it less boring than just words, more aesthetic. I think adding some videos onto one of my pages will add more to it, it could also give people a small tutorial if they wanted to know how to do something. On the other hand I think including more widgets would make it better for multiple reasons, it would mean including more links which would make it look better also meaning anyone can find the right pages easier for them. Using more links could also link people to my social media to build a following.

Skills

Over the course of six months, I have developed skills and learnt new ones. These include building my time management this is mainly due to the things expected in, or projects, time management gives you the ability to make sure you have all of your things on time. From experience poor time management leads to projects not being to the best of your or their ability. I’ve developed my communication skills especially in team projects. Communicating my ideas and thoughts on other people’s ideas was always something I struggled with, the past year I have pushed myself to be more vocal about what I think would work and my ideas have sometimes been used and other times we have built on those ideas and included everyone’s, being able to communicate the way I think things would work made me more involved. Along with my communication development came teamwork, teamwork again has been something I’ve always hated but the ability to work in a team is important so I pushed myself and I have developed teamworking. Using this towards making our project the best it could possibly be, using all of our ideas and suggestions made this easier, which is why teamwork is so important.

Some of my strengths include positive attitude, resilience and problem solving. These are all important skills to have for many reasons, having a positive attitude keeps you in a good mood during the day, it keeps you well focused and it also keeps the people around you smiling. Being resilient is also very important it means you can again stay focused but it also means that if it gets difficult or you don’t want to do it you normally keep going anyway, it also means you can help other people and push through tough situations. Problem solving means that you can handle and think up new ways when a bad situation or a problem comes your way, for example say a clip of your footage is blurry instead of panicking or after panicking for a small while in my case, you would be able to think of a way to sort it out and deal with the issue and still make your project in time.

However some of my weaknesses like I mentioned earlier are, communication, self motivation and organisation. I am working on improving my communication, by asking for help more often when I feel stuck, asking for help means I can broaden my knowledge as well as getting the work done the way its supposed to first time. Self motivation makes at work home easier, it means you can keep going with work and find it easy, without getting distracted or bored. It also means that I can then get on with my work without talking and distracting my peers meaning we can all get more work done. My organisation skills are shocking, I need to build them up so I can get everything done on time, being organised also means I can bring the right things to college, put the right clips in the right folders and everything will be where it is meant to be. This will be good because it means I wont have to worry about everything on the day because I know I will have it already.
